Justice Wilson Sandura, who has been Supreme Court judge for decades, went into voluntary retirement in August. Sandura has been a Supreme Court judge since 1998. He served as a High Court judge between 1983 and 1997, and was judge president from 1984.

The Supreme Court Registrar confirmed the resignation of Sandura. He resigned at 70. Officials said he regretted the current circumstances which constrained him, opting to take early retirement following run-ins with the government over verdicts unpalatable to the regime.

Sandura has run afoul of government authorities in one way or another. Sandura however denies he is mulling early retirement.

Sandura remains highly esteemed in the eyes of law-abiding people – both within and beyond the borders of Zimbabwe – as a man of the highest integrity. He has resisted handing judgements to suit the political thinking of the executive. He has handed down a myriad of dissenting judgements on various issues.

The Law Society of Zimbabwe bemoaned the resignation of Justice Sandura.

"He was constant and stayed the course like a candle that continued to burn and bring light to a dark room," Law Society of Zimbabwe president Tinoziva Bere said in a statement. "He is principled and courageous and he can be proud of the service he rendered to the cause of justice and the rule of law in this country.

“He endured service under conditions, which some could not tolerate and resigned. Some of the best judgments on record in this country carry his name; sadly some of them had to be dissenting judgments in the Supreme Court."

"The judiciary is poorer without the skill he goes away with. We hope he is available to save this country in other capacities to advance the cause of justice."
