IDC court Indian investors

The Industrial Development Corporation of Zimbabwe is courting Indian investors for a partnership to build another motor vehicle plant, The Zimbabwean can exclusively reveal.

The IDC, currently led by Mike Ndudzo, is among the few parastatals that chalk up millions for President Mugabe's cash-strapped government each year. IDC spokeswoman Rindirai Shoko, told Indian investors gathered at the one-day investment conference here today that the parastatal's bosses were impressed by the TATA buses which are made in India.

"We want a motor vehicle plant where we can build low cost vehicles," Shoko said.

"We realise that the Zimbabwean motor industry needs a low cost car."

The IDC owns Willowvale Mazda Motor Industries whose Madza vehicles come in kit form but are very expensive when compared to vehicles imported from South Africa and Japan that have flooded the local market.

The Zimbabwe Government has regularly said it would ban the importation of all second hand and left hand drive vehicles at the end of the month much to the dismay of thousands of motorists and potential motorists who say they cannot afford the WMMI "expensive" cars.

The sentiments by Shoko come as Zimbabweans are jostling to beat the month-end government deadline for car importations due to exorbitant costs.

"We want a joint partnership with India," Shoko said.
