
The group’s co-ordinators, Jenni Williams and Magondonga Mahlangu, were subjected to obscenities and assault by a team of police officers in the Bulawayo Central Police Station after their arrest during a peace march.
They were then dragged to the Tredgold Magistrates Court on September 23. Still nursing assault injuries, they were remanded in custody until October 6, on trumped-up charges of kidnap and theft.
The complaint, recorded as Case No. IR 7900/1, comes as the ZRP is claiming credit for making strides toward compliance with internationally recognised policing – including curbing excessive force.
The Investigating Officer assigned to the case was openly defied by Dzikiti, who refused to even accompany him to record a statement, according to Mahlangu. The junior officer failed to hold his superior to account.
Rights groups say Zimbabwe needs a separate entity to handle complaints against police 'because police cannot police themselves.'
