This was revealed at a Directors of Housing and Community Services Forum held here recently. The federation was formed 1997 as a network of saving schemes for the poor and urban communities.
“Of the secured stands, 3 000 are fully serviced with sewer, water and road network systems. Another 2 100 of the stands were developed into housing units by the federation on behalf of the beneficiaries. Land was mainly acquired from various local authorities nationwide,” said a representative from the federation.
He did, however, express concern at the ever increasing cost and non-availability of land for housing projects. The housing scheme has an estimated 46 000 family membership across the country.
Some local organisations such as ZINAHCO, Zim-Habitat, Practical Action, UN- Habitat, CWGH and UN Women are working with the federation to provide housing for the poor.
A presentation made by Zim-Trust Housing Finance, NHDT, at the forum, indicated that it had targeted to help fight homelessness through developing more than 50 000 housing units by 2015.
