The local fire station, which has 13 fire fighters instead of the required 36, has been depending on tenders from the Kwekwe based steel company, Zimasco, to attend to fire outbreaks in the city.
Zimasco, once the bedrock of the small city because it employed most the people here, has for more than a decade experiencing viability problems, resulting in the majority of its employees being laid off. Chief Fire Officer, Cleopas Maguma, revealed that at times fire-fighting teams would refuse to go to disaster scenes due to outdated equipment.
