Cops bring Bwanali to court

Zanu (PF) activist, Chengetai Bwanali has finally been brought to court following threats by a Human Rights lawyer to stage a one-man demonstration against selective application of justice by police. According to a police report filed by two MDC-T Mashonaland East Provincial Security officers, Wellington Makonese and Kenneth Jack, the Zanu (PF) activist assaulted and attempted to run over them with a car. The incident took place at Dombotombo-Murewa road turn off last May.

Bwanali made a counter complaint on May 10 and Makonese and Jack were subsequently detained at Marondera District Police Holding Cells for three days before being released on $30 bail each.

Their lawyer threatened to demonstrate if the ‘perpetrator of violence’ was not brought to justice. Bwanali was eventually arraigned before the magistrates’ court and released on $40 bail. He denies the charges and says the MDC security agents sprayed him with an unidentified chemical. The trial continues on July 24.
