Disregarding race and tribe

The music of Inkanyezi Zezulu (The Stars of Heaven), a 12-member outfit formed in 2010, rocks here.

The group was started in Hillbrow and comprises eight Zimbabweans and four South Africans. “This is a way of unifying musicians. We advise other musicians to work with whoever has talent and disregard race and tribe,” said group member Mxolisi Nkomo.

“As youths, it was important to revive and restore our culture as everyone in this group grew up listening and dancing to cultural music,” Nkomo added.

Their debut album was Inkanyezi Zezulu Emthethwandaba with 11 tracks recorded at Lethumbuso Music Promotion in Joburg. With this album, they were nominated as the 2011 South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) Awards finalists.

“As we were new-comers in the music industry, it really encouraged us to work extra hard and now we know that we are appreciated in this cultural music industry,” said another member, Nqobile Gift Ndlovu.

“We have performed with traditional music greats like Thokozani Langa and the only missing link is to share the same stage with Black Mambazo. When this finally happens, our childhood dream will be fulfilled,” he added.
