Journalist assaulted at political rally

Freelance photojournalist Regis Marisamhuka was on 22 July 2012 allegedly assaulted by ZANU PF supporters at Murombedzi growth point in Zvimba where he had travelled to cover an MDC-T rally.

According to Marisamhuka, two distinct groups comprising Zanu PF and MDC-T were gathered at the venue of the scheduled rally.

However, upon entering the football grounds where the two political parties had converged, Marisamhuka was allegedly assaulted by Emmanuel Tandi who is said to be an aspiring ZANU PF candidate in the pending general elections.

Allegations are that Tandi demanded to know why Marisamhuka was taking pictures without his permission before grabbing him by the neck and wrenching his camera away.

Marisamhuka then filed a complaint of assault and theft of the camera with the officer-in-charge at Zvimba police station, Inspector Nyahunde. The inspector then accompanied him to the venue where Tandi allegedly admitted confiscating the camera for purposes of deleting the pictures.

Tandi, however, failed to return the camera in question. John Ndomene, a member of the Media Lawyers Network represented Marisamhuka.

MISA- Zimbabwe position

MISA Zimbabwe urges political parties to restrain their supporters. Political parties and their supporters should respect the watchdog role played by journalists as members of the fourth estate and desist from harassing journalists or engaging in any other manner that may hinder the media from freely executing its lawful and professional mandate.
