“They would like to stop development projects in Mbare to give an impression to the people that the MDC has failed. Some boreholes were sabotaged and at one time we sent people to repair them and they were chased away. The most worrying thing is that Mbare needs serious resuscitation, yet these youths are blocking many projects that could help improve the lives of the people,” said Denga, adding that the most serious cause for concern was the partisan nature of the police force, which stood idly by as Chipangano militia violated the law at will.
At one time, the MDC-T MP was assaulted by rowdy youths at Mbare hostels after he had gone to see living conditions at the densely populated hostels. Threats on his life by the Chipangano youths have made it difficult for him to engage his constituents.
He also expressed concern over the persecution of vendors by the youth militia, who are forcing desperate residents to pay $1 a day to be allowed to sell their wares. They are also being compelled to buy Zanu (PF) party cards.
The gang mounts unsanctioned roadblocks and extorts money from motorists and public transport operators. It is also accused of assaulting innocent people and forcing Mbare residents to pay a ‘‘protection fee’’.
