The 28 year old swimmer finished third in her heat with a time of 2:10:93, to grab the eighth and final qualifying place for today's evening's final.

Coventry, though, failed by 0.42 seconds to meet her morning heat time in which she recorded 2:10:51, the second best time for the event on the day.

This follows the disappointment of Sunday in which the Zimbabwean failed to reach the final of the 100 metre backstroke after finishing second from last in the semi-finals.

Coventry who has reduced her events at the London Games but still has the

200 metre backstroke to come. She has won gold medals in the event, starting in Athens and then Beijing, and holds the Olympic record for the event.

Her 100 metre backstroke Olympic record of 58.77 was shattered on Sunday by Australian Emily Seebohm, who recorded a time of 58.23 for a new Olympic record.
