Peace Makers work for change

Peace Makers, a humanitarian organisation established by Marko Thebe, is working hard to mobilise resources for social projects in the city’s high density suburbs. The organisation first brought residents together by setting up street soccer tournaments, debate forums and prayer vigils. It recently broadened its activities to include donations of basic materials like shoes and clothes.

“We donated shoes to a number of elderly beneficiaries in the city and soccer balls to the youth as a way of not only keeping them busy and off the streets, but also as a way of keeping them interacting,” said Thebe, who sources the basics from well-wishers in South Africa.

Thebe is mobilising people in Bulawayo to participate in peace building programmes and is planning a soccer and netball tournament for next month.

“Political intolerance has been a major hindrance to social cohesion and economic development in this country, so involving the youth will hopefully undermine it,” added Thebe.
