The tournament will involve teams from various local prisons. There are over eight teams in the inmates’ league called Prison Inmates Football association drawn from various prisons in the city.
Last week on Saturday, ZPS hosted a Prison Inmates Heroes Tournament which was held at Mutare Farm Prison and local journalists took part.
Gunners FC won the tournament after beating Mutare Farm Prison Rovers 3-2 in a penalty shoot out. For organising the tournament, the prison inmates received a donation of a 29 colour televisions, a Wiztech decoder, two sets of soccer uniforms and five soccer balls from its matron, Penelope Mushohwe.
Zimbabwe Union of Journalists chairman for Manicaland Chapter, Oliver Karuru, commended ZPS for making remarkable strides in fulfilling its mandate of rehabilitation.
“I commend the Zimbabwe Prison Service for coming up with this noble cause in an effort to promote sport as part of your rehabilitation programme,” he said.
