Narrating his ordeal at the just-ended Alternative Mining Indaba held in Harare last week, Cosmas Sunguro said Chinese employers at Anjin beat up, overworked and subjected workers to poor working conditions. He said employees were paid very little.
Sunguro, who is also a member of the Chiadzwa Community Development Trust, said he went through hell while working for the mining company.
“The Chinese are very ruthless. They did all sorts of evil things to us and I can confirm that they made me eat both a dog and a donkey. After working for long hours without food, they left you with no option but to eat the food they provided which included dog and donkey meat,” Sunguro said.
He also told the convention that he was fired for negotiating better wages and working conditions.
“They fired up to 1500 workers including myself for protesting against poor salaries,” he added.
Anjin is reportedly the biggest mining operation in the Marange area.
Unlike the other firms, Mbada Diamonds and Marange Resources which have partnerships with the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation, the Chinese and army jointly own Anjin.
