Dance group helps unemployed youths

Winners of this years’ Chibuku Neshamwari traditional dance contest’s top prize of $5,000,

Mufakose-based Batsiranai Dance Group, is providing a livelihood for talented unemployed youths in the high density suburb.

Since its formation in 1994, the 15-member group has been recruiting youngsters in the area and performed regularly in Mufakose and surrounding areas, raising money through gate charges.

Sometimes the group is hired to perform at various functions. The manager, Jim Luke, said that since its formation, the group had nurtured a lot of traditional dancers.

“We have also been assisting some of our members who are still in school with payment of school fees,” said Luke.

A member of the group, Margaret Jonasi said, “Traditional dance has become our major source of livelihood. We have been able to get some cash through our performances and the group has helped most of us to earn a living.”
