Kapowezha bounces back

Former Zimbabwe youth international, Elasto Kapowezha, has come out of retirement to help his South African first division, FC AK, in their quest to gain promotion to the Absa Premiership.

The 38-year-old midfielder had called time on his playing career ahead of the 2011/12 season to coach FC AK, whose status has since been bought by Atlie FC. Kapowezha, who has briefly coached the Eldorado Park-based side, told The Zimbabwean he had signed on to play for another two years at the request of the new owners. “I have reversed the decision to hang up my boots, after the new owners and the technical team asked me to play on and guide the youngsters as we build a new team that will challenge strongly for promotion,” said the long-serving player.

FC AK, riddled by controversy since its formation six years ago, has failed in its promotion bid over the years. The club was once relegated from the third-tier Vodacom League. “I am confident of the team’s chances this time round. Last season, we played well and eventually finished fifth to narrowly miss out on the playoffs. If we improve on that form, I have no doubt we can achieve our goal,” he added.

The former Caps United star has previously played for a number of South African PSL clubs, namely Bidvest Wits, Ria Stars and Amazulu. He also had stints with Lech Poznan, Dyskobolia and Sokol Tychy in Poland.
