Mutare Fire Brigade fails

The Fire Brigade was recently exposed for lack of preparedness when a supermarket and property worth thousands of dollars were razed to the ground at Sakubva bus terminus. The Fire Brigade was called to the scene but could not put out the fire due to lack of adequate equipment.

The fire hydrants in Sakubva were blocked and there was no water, so they were forced to drive around looking for alternative hydrants. By the time the team came back, everything was burnt.

Residents blamed the local authority for not investing in fire equipment, despite levying them.

“We are losing our properties to fire in the city but the local authority has not done much to invest in fire tenders. Something has to be done urgently,” said Mike Mukuwapasi of Sakubva Magreka.

Mutare Town Clerk, Obert Muzawazi said the city needed a fire tender with a water carrying capacity of 5,000 litres. The current one is only 1,500 litres big. “At the moment we can`t manage fires,” he said.
