Together with his twin brother, Wilfred, William starred for Black Aces when they won the league title in 1992. The two joined South Africa’s Umtata Bush Bucks in 1993. The “Golden Fox”, who also scored a number of goals direct from the corner kick, shares his best of the best moments.
My Best teammate
Obviously, my twin brother, Wilfred; we did everything together, on and off the field. He was always there for me, was the most disciplined player I played with and gave good advice. I relied on him for pre-match advice and I enjoyed his advice throughout my career.
My Best ever Zimbabwean player
Moses ‘Bambo’ Chunga. I used to go and watch him play for Dynamos when I was still a boy and I learnt a lot from that. To him, it looked like playing and scoring were the simplest things on the pitch. He also possessed great skills and dribbling techniques that I really enjoyed and tried to imitate, despite being a defender. Players like him are irreplaceable.
My Best game
One when I scored two goals – both from corner kicks, for the senior national team in the Cosafa Cup final against Lesotho. I still wonder how I managed to do that. It was unbelievable! Very few players would do that. We won the match 3-0, with the other goal coming from Luke Jukulile.
My Best stadium
I played in dozens of stadiums, but playing at Barbourfields Stadium, especially for the national team, was magnificent. The turf was superb and the atmosphere was always electrifying.
My Best coach
Steve Kwashi had selection. He was a coach who always wanted the best out of his players. He was a good motivator and the greatest tactician Zimbabwe has ever seen.
My Best defender partner
Kimathi Dlamini and I were always there for each other. We were telepathic in that Aces defence. He was very good in the air, skillful and solid at the back. Youth could learn a lot from him.
My Best team
Black Aces, which had the best players in Zimbabwe back then, with the likes of John Maduka, John Mbidzo and Wilfred. Most of us became household names and in 1992 we won the league championship. I will cherish that forever and pass that joyful moment to generations to come.

Japhet Mparutsa, Eddie Kasere, Sunday Marimo, Francis Shonhai, John Mbidzo, William Mugeyi, Benjamin Nkonjera, Peter Ndlovu, Moses Chunga, Wilfred Mugeyi, Vitalis Takawira. The coach would be the late Peter Nyama. If these players were of the same age, this would have been the most formidable squad to ever represent Zimbabwe.
