Although the law makes it mandatory for farmers to destroy it, both the farmers and the government department for crop protection turn a blind eye. Most farmers do not have the know- how to collect soil samples from fields and send to the laboratory for analysis. The results would determine the rate of manure, lime, fertilizer and type of crop to plant. With mono-cropping in practice, yields are dwindling. – M Muda, Harare

Grappling with weeds, poor soil

Most crops favour neutral soils. The noxious, exotic latana camara makes the soil acidic and poisonous to livestock.
