The leader of a team of visiting doctors from the Netherlands, Casey Mayes, said his country was keen to strengthen ties with Zimbabwe, particularly in the health sector.
“We want to improve relations between our countries,” he told The Zimbabwean. Netherlands has at least 50 doctors and professionals working in Zimbabwe.
“They are very happy to work here and very proud to support the people of Zimbabwe,” he said.
Mayes, who is touring cities in Zimbabwe, said the economic situation had hampered improvements in the health sector. He said the majority of Zimbabweans’ living standards, especially those living in the rural areas, had been compromised by the non-availability of nutritious foods.
He also said the non-collection of garbage in the crowded high density suburbs had fuelled the spread of cholera and other diseases.
“It is important for the Zimbabwean government to allocate more funds towards resuscitating the health sector,” he said.
Mayes added that they would also be establishing a medical school in Zimbabwe.
