Most boreholes are dry and villagers have resorted to using dirty and unpurified water from the few dams they share with animals such as cattle and goats.
Speaking to journalists during a tour of the district to assess the critical water situation, Bulilima District Council Chairperson Morgan Ndebele said some villagers were walking more than 10km to get water.
“The situation is so critical here, people have no water due to the poor rains,” said Ndebele. Ndebele added if there was no rain soon, locals would lose more animals.
Last month the Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers’ Union president, Donald Khumalo, called on the government to take urgent measures to save livestock in that region.
