Eight football officials, five players and two journalists have been banned for life for their alleged involvement in the scandal. ZIFA announced that these life bans came into force on the day they were made public.
TI-Z defines corruption as the abuse of entrusted power for personal gain. In this instance players abused powers bestowed on them for personal and private benefit at the expense of the entire nation.
TI-Z believes this is a positive step by ZIFA in eliminating corruption in sports not only in football but across all sectors of society.
We strongly call upon the government to follow ZIFA’s example in weeding out corruption in Zimbabwe.
ZIFA should be applauded for bravery in fighting against this social scourge and it is hoped that this move will inspire Zimbabweans to eliminate corruption in the sporting fraternity. – Munyaradzi T. Nkomo, Harare
