Cops arrest 79 WOZA members

Seventy nine WOZA members were on Monday arrested in Bulawayo and later released without any charges after staging a peaceful protest at the City Council Tower block over the deteriorating water situation in the city.

According to a statement issued by Jennifer Williams, WOZA’s national Coordinator, those arrested included two babies and a 16 year old girl who was handcuffed for over an hour the police officers claimed they could not locate the handcuff keys. Williams said initially 150 WOZA members were arrested but 70 refused entry into the police station.

“The peaceful protest targeted at council workers at Tower block offices as a way to pressurize them to refuse to implement oppressive disconnections and to adhere to water load shedding timetables. City council in days gone by managed water more effectively by rationing earlier in the year before it got to crisis stage.” said Williams.

Williams said Woza is concerned with the unhealthy situation which had been brought by the water crisis.

“Homes are now unlivable as toilets are stinking and there is littering of human waste in the streets. This is abuse considering the dirty water that we are drinking .They should provide chemicals to purify the water,” reads part of the WOZA demands.

Williams blamed council security guards of creating tension by calling riot police.

She said many of the members who staged the protest have not had water for weeks and whenever it comes it is dirty and undrinkable.
