Strikers sharpen their boots

As the championship race enters home stretch, strikers are sharpening their boots as they bid for the Golden Boot award.

Shabanie Mine’s Nelson Mazivisa (26) was seven goals short of his target of 25 strikes, with two games remaining. The premiership’s leading marksman, on loan from FC Platinum, has been a vital cog in the Zvishavane outfit’s quest for glory, banging goals with ease. “I had set myself a target of 25 goals, but as things stand, 20 is now a more realistic one,” said the striker, who needs at least a goal in each game to achieve that feat. His former coach at the Chinda Boys, Luke Masomere, paid tribute: “Nelson is very special and comes as a rare breed of a striker – strong on the ground and in the air. I am happy that he is doing well at the club.

He gets into very good areas, where his strength makes it very difficult for defenders to push him off the ball. Once he gets ahead of you, then that’s it. Defenders in the league are not comfortable playing against him.” Dynamos’ midfield magician, Denver Mukamba looks likely to become the ultimate soccer star of the year. He has scored 10 goals for the league-chasing club, reminding fans of the days of such greats like Memory Mucherahohwa, Lloyd Mutasa and Desmond Maringwa.

He shared the 10 goals slot with Highlanders’ Milton Ncube, one of the stars that set the PSL alight this season, as he took the Bulawayo giants back to their traditional position of fighting for the Golden spoon. “We are working as a team and there is no need for me to fight for individual merits. I will only be happy if we bring the league title to Bulawayo at the end of it all,” said Ncube.
