In an interview with The Zimbabwean this week, Victoria Falls mayor Nkosiolathi Jiyane said the money was part of a fund the central government had set aside to rehabilitate infrastructure in the resort town ahead of the assembly.
The government has promised the local authority $10 million for the rehabilitation of infrastructure such as roads, buildings and the Victoria Falls Hospital. “We are very glad that the government has given us $2 million so far. Currently our engineers are finalising the release of another $2.6 million. We are prioritizing our projects according to their order of importance,” said Jiyane.
The mayor said the water project would be completed in March next year, four months before the historic event, which will be co-hosted with Zambia.
He added that part of the money would be used to rehabilitate a pump house in Mkhosana Township and replace some water and sewerage pipes.
“We want to make sure that even after the Assembly, our residents will have one of the best water and sewerage reticulation systems in the country. We also want to take advantage of this rare opportunity to market the town,” he said.
