The MDC-T Spokesperson, Douglas Mwonzora, said so far almost all fired party officials from MDC-N had officially come back to their original home.

“We have officially registered 50 councilors and all MPs and Senators who were fired by the Welshman Ncube led party,” he said. “This is leading to the reunification of the MDC.”

Last week, Ncube’s party fired three senators, Kembo Dube (Umzingwane South), Dalumuzi Khumalo (Lupane) and Patrick Dube (Gwanda Central). They also fired two MPs, Nomalanga Khumalo (Umzingwane) and Thandeko Mkandla of Gwanda constituency and 49 councilors on the grounds that they were supporting MDC-T.

MDC-N Spokesperson, Nhlanhla Dube, said the firing of law-breaching members was just a formality for what happened two years ago.

“According to the party’s constitution, if one supports another party, he or she automatically ceases to be a party member. Khumalo announced in public that he belonged to Mutambara two years ago,” he said.

He said the firing of the members was not going to affect the party negatively.

“By firing them we have removed the poison that was in our body,” said Dube.

“The party depends on its supporters who voted them in power and they shall still vote for new candidates in the coming elections.”

Political analyst, Alexander Rusero, said the firing of MDC-N officials would have huge implications for both the party and its representation of the electorate.

“Politics is a game of representation. If an MP is fired, it means the electorate or constituency of that party loses political representation,” he said.

Rusero said the welcome of fired officials to MDC-T did not mean the reunification of the main MDC.

“This does not mean MDC is reuniting. It is just a survival strategy before elections,” he said.
