
In October Nyathi, who is also Chairman of the Zimbabwe Musicians Rights Association (Zimura), represented Zimbabwe at a meeting of the council in Johannesburg. “Being an artist myself I was selected to represent artists which I do appreciate. Art communicate in a way that no other form of communication does, think of comedy, clowns, they communicate and people laugh but the message will have been delivered,” he told journalists in a report-back press conference.
The Senzeni Na hitmaker plans to engage arts practitioners to denounce gender based violence during a three-year awareness programme, which will include art and essay competitions in schools.
He has already approached the Ministry of Education which he says has offered to support the initiative.
He challenged local artists to start composing or creating pieces that focus on gender violence, promising a compilation of such works and awards to be won.
The Regional Creative Artist Advisory Group was formed to support increased public awareness and social mobilization to end violence against women and girls.
