ZCTU Southern Region spokesperson, Percy Mcijo, said the workers had approached the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions for technical assistance and legal advice following the takeover.
The workers have also notified the Ministry of Industry and Trade about the takeover of Ascot Clothing.
“We, the workers and management of Ascot Clothing Pvt Ltd would like to notify your office that we took over the running of the company after the Director and owner, Doron Kirkel, deserted and went back to South Africa.
We are therefore, seeking your assistance to help us with logistics to resuscitate the company,” read a letter dated 26 November 2012 that was signed by representatives from both the workers and management.
“We have sacrificed a lot to prevent this company from collapsing, including working for many months with little or no pay,” they said in a statement.
They said with each of them having more than 10 years experience, ranging from shop-floor production, sales and management, they had enough expertise to produce high quality garments.
