The programme, entitled "Zimbabwe Anti-Voter Apathy Project" is targeting youths from areas of Domboshava, Budiriro and Glen View.
The YAD National Coordinator, Tichaona Masiyambiri told The Zimbabwean that the Zimbabwe Anti-Voter Apathy Project was targeting to encourage a total of 5 000 youths to register to vote this year.
"As part of this project, we have been moving around Domboshava, Budiriro and Glen View where we are encouraging young people to register to vote. The programme was well received and we are seeing the fruits of that initiative.
"Our aim is to spread the project to other areas besides the three that we are currently focusing on. We want to encourage youths to vote for responsible and accountable persons," said Masiyambiri.
He added, "We are also encouraging young people to contest for positions of leadership and we have seen an overwhelming response from young people some of whom are eyeing positions as Members of Parliament and councillors.
"We are saying that young people should not just be road runners and stone throwers for politicians. We need young people to represent young interests."
Masiyambiri encouraged youths to desist from political violence during the forthcoming elections saying that it was regrettable that as the country heads for elections, some youths were being manipulated by politicians to engage in violence.
"It's unfortunate that there are emerging incidences of violence mostly perpetrated by the youths as we head towards elections. It's unfortunate and we would like to condemn that in the strongest terms.
We want a peaceful election that will bring a credible result," said Masiyambiri. Masiyambiri said that YAD will be intensifying its "Dialogue Project" in various areas in the country to promote peace ahead of elections.
The Dialogue Project emphasises the need to desist from violence when resolving disputes.
"We will use that initiative to encourage the use of dialogue in solving conflicts among communities. Also, in Domboshava, we have launched the Peace Gardens project under which we have identified a piece of land where youths from different political parties will engage in farming projects.
"This will give the youths the realisation that they have something in common thereby limiting their chances of fighting during election time," said Masiyambiri.
The Youth Alliance for Democracy was formed in 2008 to promote youth participation in the democratisation agenda in Zimbabwe and has a membership of 14 000 from across the country.
