In an interview, Mine Manager Newman Nago, said the company had done 40 percent of the required work to access ISO 140001 certification. The ISO 14001 considers environmental management systems, life cycle analysis, communication and auditing.
“We are now gradually improving our production levels and we have since dewatered 191 metres to the current water level,” he said.
Nago added that they were hoping that the mine would operate at optimum levels this year. “We are generally happy with the progress that we have made,” he said.
Redwing Mine runs under Mutare River and the gold mining concern has always been pumping out water that seeps into the shaft but water levels rose significantly in recent years resulting in a negative impact on the production.
Coupled with the economic meltdown, the lack of spares to repair the water pump exacerbated the challenges, resulting in the mine closing shop. Metallon, which owns five gold mines in the country – Shamva, Redwing, Arcturus, Mazowe and How Mine – closed all its mines in 2008, with some companies resuming operations in July 2009.
