Richard Midzi was shot in both legs by Matandi when he was moving flea market wares from the road side into his house in Dombotombo on December 20, 2012.
“Imagine being shot at by someone you know,” said Midzi.
Richard’s relatives said the case was reported at Dombotombo Police Station but no arrests were made. When Matandi visited Midzi in hospital, he said he had mistaken the victim for a thief. He also expressed regret for the incident.
Richard, who has since been discharged from hospital, is struggling to walk due to severe pain and a swollen left leg.
“I wonder if I will ever manage to fend for my family again. Matandi should at least do something for my family since he has escaped arrest,” said Midzi.
Efforts by The Zimbabwean to establish how the police have responded to the incident were fruitless. An officer who said was the member in charge of Dombotombo Police Station, referred all queries to the district commanding officer, Chief Superintendent Dube, who was not available to comment.
Failure by police to make arrests has further eroded public confidence in law enforcement agents.
