Exit permission
New laws allowing Cubans to leave the socialist island without government permission have come into effect. Citizens now only require a passport. Critics of the reform say the $100 cost of a passport is too prohibitive for many Cubans.

Gunmen have fired shots at the Athens offices of conservative Greek Prime Minister Antonis
Samaras. Police said no one was in the offices at the time and no one was hurt. The shooting – blamed on anarchist groups – has been widely condemned.
Civil unrest
Kachin rebels in northern Burma say government shelling has killed at least three civilians, including a 15-year-old boy. Airstrikes three weeks ago attracted global condemnation. The region is demanding greater independence from Rangoon.
Train derailed
At least 19 people have been killed when a military train carrying recruits derailed south of Cairo. More than 100 passengers were injured. Egyptian roads and railways have poor safety record but it is unclear what caused this accident.

Botched rescue
Somali rebels say a second French soldier has died after a botched attempt to rescue a hostage last weekend. One soldier died during the late-night raid involving up to 50 troops and five aircraft that tried to free Denis Allex, held since 2009.
Mubarak retrial
Ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak has been granted a retrial on charges relating to the death of protesters in 2011. They were sentenced to life in prison last year. Corruption charges against Mubarak’s sons will also be retried.
Political shooting
Unidentified gunmen have shot Guatemalan mayor Carlos
Enrique Castillo Medrano six times while he waited for a haircut. President Otto Perez Molina, elected on a law and order platform, condemned the attack and called for calm.
Sectarian violence
Sectarian violence on the streets of Northern Ireland has continued into a second week. Petrol bombs were thrown at Catholic churches in Belfast and a policeman and bus driver were injured. Riots at the weekend injured more than 30 police.
Swartz dead
Activist and co-creator of online services Reddit and RSS, Aaron Swartz, has been found dead in New York. The 26-year-old, who police confirmed died by suicide, was expected to face trial this year over the theft of millions of online documents.
