Seven players for AJC

Seven junior tennis players will represent Zimbabwe in the Africa Junior Championships in Kenya next month.

They are Nicole Dzenga, Alwin Mushonga, Karren Muswere, Karren Machisa, Kimberly Bhunu, Julius Mtetwa and Mehluli Sibanda, who all fared well in the recent zonal qualifying games in Namibia.

Tennis Zimbabwe national selector, Freeman Nyamunokora, urged the players to pull up their socks ahead of the challenge. “Some of them lost to players from Lesotho in the Namibia and they must now guard against such disappointments,” said Nyamunokora.

The continental finals were moved from Egypt due to the on-going political tension. Nyamunokora said Zimbabwe may have managed to get seven slots in the Kenya AJC finals, but their performance left a lot to be desired, judging by their eventual positions in the regional qualifiers.

The top eight players from the 32 in each category automatically won the ticket to partake in the AJC finals and of the seven, only Dzenga managed to scoop top position in her Under-16 girls’ category.

Mushonga bowed out of the zonal competition, after attaining fourth position out of 32 in the Under-16 boys, while fellow competitor, Mtetwa found the going tough and ended on sixth position.

Muswere, who took part in the Under-16 girls’ category, landed eighth position, the same with fellow Under-14 girls’ ace, Machisa. Bhunu settled for seventh position, in the same category, while Saurombe was ninth in the boys’ category and Bulawayo-based Sibanda seventh. Annette Matumba won a silver medal in the Under-12 girls’ category.
