Chipanga fought in Mutodi’s corner following negative responses from some ZBC staff when he attacked the Coca Cola Top 50 as flawed, describing the radio station as “a sinking Titanic marred with bias and unprofessionalism”. The former state broadcasting officials had dismissed Mutodi’s remarks as “coming from an interested party” – a move that did not go down well with Chipanga.
“Is there a rule that a musician must have nothing to say if anything goes wrong in music? Who else is better qualified to speak on one’s field?” Chipanga fumed. The Kwachu Kwachu hitmaker thanked Mutodi for revealing the double standards rocking the national airwaves.
“VaMutodi ndoda kukutendai zvikuru (Mutodi, I want to congratulate you). You may not be the best musician in Zimbabwe but you have said what is best for music, if not for musicians. You have shown a rare heart for our musicians regardless of yourself doing very well this time around. It is unGodly, cruel and corrupt for a national radio that has a thousand singers and has just 50 places for them and of the 50, one person is given three places,” said Chipanga.
The verbal war was sparked when Mutodi issued a lengthy tongue lash titled “Radio Zimbabwe now gone to the dogs”. He described the end-of-year chart show, which saw Jah Prayzah taking three positions (one, two and six) as “flawed”and “deplorable”.
