Dzidzai Chitaka of the Youth Forum of Zimbabwe, which has been on a nationwide campaign to register youths as voters, said the response has been discouraging and urged that electoral and security reforms be carried out before the elections are held.
“Why should I register and vote when I know that the army is the one that will make the decision on any election result? I will only register and vote when the security reforms have been carried out,” said Moses Mabvura from Platform for Youth Development.
The Minister of State for State Security, Sydney Sekeramayi, has ruled out the possibility of security sector reforms.
“Such moves will weaken the country and leave us at the mercy of our enemies. There cannot be any security sector reforms,” said Sekeramayi, who is believed to be the latest entry on the list to succeed President Robert Mugabe. He did not specify who the enemies were.
Richard Zizhou from Youth Dialogue Zimbabwe said: “The only enemies for the state seem to be the youths and people who differ in their thinking from Zanu (PF).”
