One year gone, Chizuze still missing

It has been a year since the disappearance of human rights activist, Paul Chizuze, with no clue of whether he is alive or not.

Chizuze (59) was last seen on 8 February 2012 just after 8pm when he left his home in Bulawayo driving his official car, a Nissan Hardbody with registration number ACJ 3446.

Chizuze was well known for his paralegal work with civic organizations like the Amani Trust.

Over the last three decades, he was employed by or worked in collaboration with the Legal Resources Foundation, Amani Trust Matabeleland, The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace, ZimRights, churches in Bulawayo, CivNet, and Masakhaneni Trust.

He also worked closely with Senator David Coltart, the Education Minister.

Deputy Director for Solidarity Peace Trust, Selvan Chetty issued a solidarity statement on Monday in memory of Chizuze.

“ We remember with gratitude the values you stood for, the decades you committed to the pursuit of democracy, peace and justice in your country.

“We are still looking for you, alive or dead. We continue to search for the truth about the events that led to your disappearance,” reads the statement.

Last year it was reported that Chizuze’s car had been found in Beitbridge with his old shoes inside.

David Coltart told a private radio station a few months ago that the activist had too much information on Gukurahundi and that might have led to his abduction.

However, national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba is on record saying they had all the records of all the people who had been reported missing and they were doing their best to find them.
