Kapowezha’s new role

Retired footballer Elasto Kapowezha is now a life skills coach at his former South African club, Bidvest Wits.

The former defender-cum-midfielder told The Zimbabwean that his plans to help players deal with distractions to their careers followed the realisation that most footballers were struggling to cope with fame.

“I teach the Wits senior and junior teams life skills, which are mainly based in the teachings of the Bible,” said the former national team player. “The aim is to build role models from our soccer players and also to help them deal with challenges that most soccer players face, like unprotected sex, alcohol abuse and financial mismanagement. I connect with other players like Wayne Sandilands (Mamelodi Sundowns) and Mark Haskins (Supersport United) who also do the same life skills programs at their respective clubs.

“The bigger picture is to be an administrator of the game whether at club or football association leadership. I really want to be a servant of this game. Money is not my goal, but service is because I love the sport so much.”
