DM rubbishes Kasukuwere

The Deputy Minister of Youth Development, Indigenisation and Empowerment, Tongai Matutu, has clashed with his boss Saviour Kasukuwere over the indigenisation programme, labelling it directionless.

Matutu said the indigenisation programme being spearheaded by Zanu (PF) was meaningless since it was meant to enrich those in positions of power at the expense of everyday Zimbabweans.

Matutu complained that Kasukuwere was excluding him from programmes and events relating to the indigenisation crusade that has already seen several companies accede to government demands to surrender majority shareholding to blacks.

There has been heated debate on indigenisation. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor last week wrote in a local weekly that the indigenisation programme, only benefitted an elite class.

His position was taken up by Finance Minister Tendai Biti, who promised to investigate the process, while Jonathan Moyo, a Zanu (PF) spin-doctor, lashed out at Gono in another weekly and described the RBZ governor of being “intellectually devoid” and ill-timing his criticism.

Matutu, who is the MDC-T legislator for Masvingo Urban, said his party was advocating a policy that would address issues to do with unemployment.

MDC-T is drumming up support around a counter economic paradigm, JUICE, that promises to create 1 million jobs by 2018, increase growth rate exponentially, further reduce inflation, deliver a $100 billion economy by 2040, improve electricity generation and build a social contract.

He dismissed the indigenisation programme as a Zanu (PF) populist blueprint, urging that it should instead be non-partisan. Matutu said he has always criticised the programme and would continue to denigrate it as long as it was not being properly run.
