CCDZ furious over arrest of members

George Makoni, Reverend Deve and Gift Konjani of the Centre for Community Development were arrested in Chegutu at the weekend while they were conducting voter education. They are being charged under the Public Order and Security Act.

In a telephone interview on Monday the organisation’s Director Phillip Pasirayi said he would seek an audience with the security authorities and make it clear that they are acting illegally.

“We are a registered trust whose mandate is clear and covers exactly what our members were doing in Chegutu. They were educating people on their right to participate in the referendum, and nothing else. “As an organization we are going to engage likeminded organizations and approach government over this development,” Pasirayi said.

National Constitution Assembly Chairperson Lovemore Madhuku recently said government should suspend POSA, during the referendum education period to make it possible for human rights defenders to educate citizens.
