Working together to reduce waste

Mutare’s success in waste management is a result of its partnership with Non Governmental Organisations and the private sector, Acting Health Services Director, Simon Mashababe, told journalists recently.

The support of NGOs such as Mercy Corps, Swedish International Development Agency, Shandira Mutare and the private sector had enabled the local authority to improve service delivery to its stakeholders.

The $1 million grant from SIDA enabled the local authority to refurbish its depleted refuse collection fleet and purchase new vehicles and equipment. He said Mercy Corps managed to rehabilitate public toilets in high-density suburbs, which were in a sorry state.

Mashababe paid tribute to councilors and residents for cleaning their areas saying the 2008 economic meltdown left the council on its knees.
