Aquatic Centre lacks resources

Efforts to rehabilitate Chitungwiza Aquatic Centre have been unsuccessful as the government struggles to raise the $2, 5 million needed for its restoration.

Minister of Education, Sport, Arts & Culture, David Coltart told The Zimbabwean that the ministry had plans to rehabilitate the complex but was facing financial challenges. “We made our application to the Ministry of Finance last year but we have not received the money. A total of $2,5 million is needed to revamp the sports facilities,” he said. The centre hosted the 1995 All Africa Games and is equipped with an Olympic sized swimming pool.

Coltart said the electrical board and water pumps that broke down in 2002 needed attention.

“Rehabilitation of Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex is a major concern for us as we want to host national events. Our pool is among the best in the world and if it gets to work again, we could attract big events and sponsors,” Coltart said.

The Sports and Recreation Commission last year returned the state of the art facility to the Ministry with the hope that it would be renovated.
