Biti accuses Mutasa of murdering Christpower Maisiri

Mutasa is the Member of Parliament for Headlands which houses Ward 8 Inyati where the 12- year- old Christpower was burnt to death last Saturday in an arson attack.

Addressing thousands of mourners gathered at Christpower’s burial in Headlands, Biti said Mutasa killed the innocent child.

“We told him in Cabinet on Monday that he (Mutasa) was responsible for Christpower’s death. Just in case he thought I was hiding behind cabinet immunity, I will say it again today. He killed the innocent soul. He can sue me for defamation if he wants but this is the truth,” Biti said.

Christpower is the son of Shepherd Maisiri, an aspiring Member of Parliament for Headlands and MDC-T Deputy Organising Secretary for the district.

Also addressing the mourners, Tsvangirai said he did not believe in Mugabe’s peace calls, saying his talk should be matched by the arrest of all perpetrators of violence.

Mugabe has since late last year called for political co-existence.

“I don’t believe in Mugabe’s peace calls due to what we have witnessed here. JOMIC (Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee) must come and investigate this issue so that we can put an end to violence as we go for elections.

“Names of the people suspected to have killed Christpower are known and the perpetrators should be arrested immediately,” he said.

The suspected assailants have been identified as: Gilbert Makura, the Zanu (PF) Chairperson for Village 47, Isaac Dobo, Annah Mumbana and Tendai Gosho.

The four are believed to have strong links to Zanu (PF) MP for Headlands, Didymus Mutasa.

Zimbabwe is expected to hold a general election this year to end a power-sharing government which was formed in 2008. Tsvangirai said Zanu (PF) had shot itself in the foot by killing the boy.

“The death of the boy has become international news, putting Zanu (PF) in bad light. Violence is a just a sign of the party’s desperation because it has reached its sunset days. People may think that MDC-T is under siege but it is Zanu (PF) which is hurting everyone because it is a cornered dog,” he added.

Tsvangirai donated cement and roofing sheets to the Maisiri family for the reconstruction of their home.

Maisiri the father broke down whilst giving a speech saying he had named his son Christpower because he owed his life to Jesus following several attempts to his life by suspected Zanu (PF) activists.

“ I am not at peace in this community. My family has been attacked several times and my wife was raped twice,” he said.

The funeral was attended by Deputy Prime Minister, Thokozani Khupe, the Minister of Information Technology, Nelson Chamisa, the Finance Minister Tendai Biti, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Jameson Timba, MDC-T national spokesperson, Douglas Mwonzora and several members from civil society.
