Cheetahs up for big showdown

Cheetahs captain, Jacques Leitao, is optimistic of the side’s chances of defending the Spar International tournament this month, despite the participation of experienced international sides like Georgia, Hong Kong and Kenya.

“It’s a good challenge ahead of the Hong Kong Sevens, which follows later on,” said Leitao. “The coming in of Hong Kong, Georgia and Kenya means the tournament will be bigger and better. It is a good challenge for us. We have beaten Kenya and Hong Kong before. With the great advantage of our home support, I think we can do it again.”

The Cheetahs will also take part in the Hong Kong and London Sevens series before the International Rugby Board World sevens series. The Gilbert Nyamutsaka-coached Cheetahs will also take part in the June IRB World Cup in Moscow, Russia, but it is the Spar tournament that they hope to use as a confidence booster ahead of that busy schedule.

“The competitive nature of the tournament works better for us and we will use it to polish our combinations and prepare for the other competitions that will follow. We owe it to our fans to do our best on home soil,” said Nyamutsaka.
