Workers abandon NGOs

Dozens of NGO employees here have fled their workplaces amid fears of an increased crack down on civic organisations by state security agents.

The development follows a series of raids on civic organisations here by the police.

Offices of at least three NGOs were ransacked in the past two weeks and property worth thousands of dollars taken away by suspected state security agents.

A spokesman for civic organisations, Zivanai Muzorodzi, told The Zimbabwean that most workers were too scared to come to work.

“We have seen a calculated move by the state to silence all NGOs ahead of the elections,” said Muzorodzi. “We are urging the Inclusive Government to intervene.”

Some of the civic organisations that were tragetted include The Zimbabwe Election Support Network, Community Tolerance and Rural Development, National Association of Non Governmental Organisations and the Zimbabwe Peace Project.

The targeted organisations are involved in voter education, democracy and good governance issues.

Meanwhile, an intended meeting between the government and NGOs collapsed last week after NGOs snubbed it.

Masvingo governor Titus Maluleke who last year banned 29 NGOs from operating in Masvingo summoned all NGOs for a meeting.

NANGO Regional Co-ordinator for the southern region, Benson Tirivaviri, confirmed that there was a meeting but said he did not attend.
