They argued that the country’s advertising industry was dying as no local models or celebrities were being used in the ads. The remarks were initially made by award-winning stand-up comedian Carl Joshua Ncube and supported by various TV consumers.

A snap survey conducted by this newspaper indicated that billboards ads were showing alien faces yet there are popular celebrities to play the role and market products to a wider network using their popularity.

The situation has been exacerbated by the fact that most commercials on ZBC are made using power point software – an ancient way of doing TV ads at a time when technology offers various modern and viewer friendly software.

Most newspaper and other print adverts are illegally produced featuring Western models, particularly in the entertainment sector, thereby killing the local advertising agencies and the industry.

Ncube said there was great need to “protect our models and our ad agencies, police the quality, maintain standards, and stop abusing clients”. He has how called for a campaign to “Save Zimbabwe Ads”.
