To observe or not to observe

EDITOR - Vice-President Joyce Mujuru and Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi have taken turns to inform the world that election observers from the United States of America and the European Union will not be invited to witness Zimbabwean elections.

My understanding of the GPA is that there has to be consensus among the parties involved in the coalition government.

Professor Ncube has already spoken on the need for international observers, so has Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai. Vice-President Mujuru and Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, therefore, cannot declare their personal wishes.

It is Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai who has been given the responsibility as official spokesperson on election matters, so until Prime Minister Tsvangirai makes an official statement regarding the invitation of election observers, Zimbabweans must take any other statement from unauthorized persons as one of the many election jokes that we are likely to experience in the run up to elections. – – ANON, by email
