ZC welcomes ICC funds

Zimbabwe Cricket officials said this week that the funds recently received from the International Cricket Council would help the country rediscover its status as a strong contender in international competitions.

The ICC gave the ZC US$1.5 million at the weekend to support an expanded schedule of ‘A’ team cricket and identify and support future international players over the next three years. “We are grateful for this support and believe that it will help strengthen our high performance pathway because it is a good investment,” said the ZC’s Managing Director, Wilfred Mukondiwa. “We also believe the TAPP award will help us become more competitive in the international arena and facilitate the continued growth of the game in our country.”

Zimbabwe is emerging from years of under-performance in international cricket, a decline attributed to the mass resignation of senior players at the turn of the century, following their differences with the ZC management and alleged political interference. A number of these have since returned to the fold, where they are now assisting in the resuscitation of the senior team’s fortunes.
