Zifa had requested that next Tuesday’s match be moved from Alexandria to another venue, citing security fears in the politically volatile country, but Fifa would have none of that. Responding to enquiries made by this paper, the Switzerland-based organisation said Zifa’s request had no basis and that its decision to reject it was justified.
“After receipt of Zifa’s letter, Fifa called for a security inspection and assessment on the occasion of the CAF Super Cup match held in Alexandria on February 23,” a spokesperson said. The post-match security report indicated that all organizational matters and those to do with overall security were adequately in place, in accordance with the established security plans for the match.
“All guarantees and assurances were given by the EFA and the match will definitely be played as scheduled in Alexandria on March 26.”
Uncertainty had preceded this weekend’s qualifier. In January, Zifa officials were quoted as saying the organisation’s coffers were running too dry to finance the team’s travel to the log-leaders.
