People’s Rights recommendation to give the diaspora a say in last weekend’s referendum.
Angry citizens voiced concern over their exclusion from the historic referendum:
Grace Kwinje, MDC-T House of Assembly aspiring candidate, highlighted the need for our country to adopt international practices.
Godfrey Viki, Zapu activist, said: “To me it’s a plan by Zanu to frustrate and get rid of opposition members by forcing them not to have interest in the country’s affairs. If you deprive someone of their right to vote it’s more than an insult.”
Tanny Nkomo, an entrepreneur, encouraged fellow diasporans not to lose hope: “It’s very unfair that we were not allowed to vote, but let’s continue fighting for a better Zimbabwe.”
Brian Muziringa, an activist: “Zimbabwean saga is very interesting and we will see where it’s heading.”
Busisiwe Gugu Moyo: “That government deprived us of our rights. We are citizens so I don’t understand why they denied us the opportunity to be responsible citizens.”
Mlungisi Tshabalala, a political activist: “It’s not right at all. They have a database of all registered people in the diaspora, but they are failing us.”
Usher Hlabangani, a taxi driver: “The money spent on Mugabe’s unnecessary birthday should have been channelled towards facilitating diaspora votes. We are tired of being excluded from national issues. We are citizens of that country and we must be respected.”
