Addressing party supporters in Mucheke over the weekend deputy minister of Youth Gender and Economic Empowerment Tongai Matutu said it is useless to have a large number of members of parliament without ensuring Tsvangirai’s victory.
Matutu who is the MDC-T Masvingo urban legislator said the power of the party rests in Tsvangirai snatching power from the aged president Robert Mugabe in polls expected this year.
“Right now look we have several members of parliament but we do not have political power because Tsvangirai is not the president”, he said.
“Talking about councilors I do not know how many we have but still we have no control because we do not have political power.
“Lets make sure that Tsvangirai wins the next elections and we will have absolute political power even with very few members of parliament”, he said.
Matutu said that this is the only chance that party supporters have to ensure that the romp to victory. He said the MDC-T should therefore mobilize people to ensure that they register as voters and ensure a resounding victory to avoid a presidential election run off poll.
“Everyone in the party should ensure that he or she brings two or three people into the party and register them as voter”.
“It is important to register as a voter but more important is to ensure that you vote on the polling day and also guard your vote”, he added.
The deputy minister said party supporters should not scratch their heads on those contesting one another in party primary elections because what is important is an MDC victory at the end of the day.
In Masvingo urban if Matutu fails to garner the required two thirds majority within party structures in his constituency he will battle it out with Masvingo city council workers committee vice chairman Bonface Mazarire and Hellen Mcghie Headmaster Tichaona Zengeya who have both shown their interest to contest the seat on an MDC-T ticket.
The winner will face either businessman Josib Ormar or former United People’s Party president Daniel Shumba who both have indicated their willingness to snatch the Masvingo urban seat from the MDC-T while representing Zanu PF.
However the participation of Shumba , a retired soldier in polls on a Zanu PF ticket now hangs in the balance after President Robert Mugabe’s party said it will only allow those who have been with the party for five consecutive years preceding to the polls.
Shumba a former Zanu PF Masvingo provincial chairman formed his UPP after being booted out of ZANU PF after being implicated in the Tsholotsho debacle in which he and other Zanu pf chairmen wanted to block Vice president Joyce Mujuru from ascending to the post of vice president.
Shumba then wanted defence minister Emmerson Munangagwa to be crowned vice president. Just last year Shumba abandoned his UPP party and rejoined ZANU PF.
However the party has stipulated that those rejoining it will have to start from party cells as ordinary members and would not be allowed to run for any posts in the forth coming polls
