Men jailed for killing thief

Four local men were dragged before the local magistrates’ court for assaulting a thief they caught siphoning diesel at a chief’s homestead.

Samuel Maphosa (24), Innocent Sithole (24) Daniel Gwenzi and Phillip Gwenzi (23) all from Chief Gwenzi village pleaded guilty to charges of culpable homicide when they appeared before magistrate Tranos Utahwashe.

They were sentenced to 24 months imprisonment each. However, Utahwashe suspended for 12 months on the condition that the men do not commit the same offence in the next five years. The remaining 12 months were converted to 240 hours of community service.

On June 22, the four assaulted Caleb Makuyana (30) who was siphoning diesel from the chief’s tractor that was parked at the house.

The men tied Makuyana’s hands and locked him a room. Makunyana managed to escape and sought refuge at Amos Makuyana’s home. The men tracked him down and took him back to the chief’s house. Makunyana later died from injuries sustained during the attack.
